Final editing

For the past few weeks we have had to edit the footage. After getting audience feedback from the focus groups, we were able to make adjustments. This included our magazine and poster. The focus groups were very helpful. It gave us an insight into what the audience wanted and how they felt about our products. Doing this enabled us to make the necesary changes. In turn improving our final products overall.

Sound

Music and foley are key elements when making our teaser trailer. Choosing the correct style of music is vital. If we make the wrong decision, it could have an adverse effect on our trailer. In order to establish the effect music has on a film, we used the example of the movie 'Rain Man'. We watched the opening to the film first with the music from the film 'Superman'. This implied that the film was in the comedy or fantasy genre. It was similar to the music of Disney films. We then watched the opening again, but this time with the music from 'Gone With The Wind'. This gave the movie a completely different feel. The movie then began to feel like a romance. Finally we watched the original opening of 'Rain Man' in which the music used was 'IKO IKO' by Belle Stars. Although the music was unconventional, i thought it worked well. The music was foreboding, and reflected the main characters life at that moment in time. The unconventionallity also reflected the state of his brother as he is autistic.

Preview: Teaser Trailer (Initial Idea)

This video is a teaser of what our group has filmed so far. We used our establishing shots and compiled them into a mini trailer. By doing this we were able to show our focus groups and gain their feedback. This included their comments on scenery, camera shots, narrative etc. The video gave them a taster and preview to what our final trailer will look like.

Filming : Day 1 - On Location

Today two members of my group and I went to film some material for our trailer. We travelled to Wapping, as the scenery is perfect for our trailer. Wapping is an old area in London, that has not yet been fully renovated and modernised. This enables us to capture the essence of the 1960's.

It took us about 45 minutes to get to Wapping and we took the underground. We were able to start filming straight away. We filmed in a tunnel walkway, that was illuminated with little lamps. This gave an eery feeling to our footage. The shot was a tight frame of me walking through the tunnel. It was a behind shot of the back of me and was a low angle shot. I was holding a wire cable (the weapon) in my gloved hand and the camera was focused on my feet.

We then moved the scene to the docking area. We were able to film on the walkway but not in the actual docks as it is private property. From the docking area, we were able to film the docking bridge, as well as underneath the bridge. From where we were positioned we filmed a wide shot of the landscape, which included the view of tower bridge.

Film Education Activity

Today I was able to practice my editing skills. I went on the website http://www.filmeducation.org/thor/make_the_cut/
It was very useful and helpful.
Practicing constructing a trailer was good practice for when my group do our final
teaser trailer. The activity was very useful and showed me the importance that editing
has. The way in which you edit something, has an effect on the narrative and the
audience.

Empire Font

In order to replicate the 'EMPIRE' magazine, my group have to use a similar font. It has been very difficult to find the exact same typography, however the closest in similarity is EF Kaffeesatz Schwarz font. My group intend to use this font on our magazine front cover.

Magazine Ideas

Along with our teaser trailer. My group will also be producing a magazine front cover and a poster. In order to do this, we will analyze various magazine covers and posters to see what techniques they use. We would like our magazine to imitate something like 'Empire', as that is a very popular and successful film magazine. Below are two examples of 'Empire' issues.

Empire Magazine: #229 (July 2008)
Empire Magazine: #231 (September 2008)

LOCATION SCOUTING

For our trailer, as a group we have had to do location scouting. We decided on two main locations. The first one is Wapping, in West London. We have chosen this location as there are cobbled streets in the area. Using cobbled streets will authenticate and add a sense of realism to our trailer. Cobbled streets are part of the era of the 1960's. Therefore they are a good asset to have in the trailer. The second location is Hampton Court and Hampton Court Maze. We have decided to use the maze as the setting for the murders. It creates a sense of mystery to the murders and the murderer.

PROPS

As filming will commence very soon, I have made a mood board of useful props. My group have been inspired by the 1960's in reference to detectives. The objects above, will preferably be used in our trailer or we will get imitations of the objects. The only prop we will not be using is the vechile. This is due to us being unable to acquire one. The props are typical conventions of 1960's detectives. Using them will make it clear to our audience the era our film is set, as well as the fact that our main character is a detective.

MOOD BOARD 1

Our group have created a mood board for inspiration. It will help us to generate ideas for our own trailer. We have used images that relate to the genre we are planning to do. A variety of the images are stereotypical conventions that a crime/detective film has.

Film Pitch : IDEA 1

Detective L.Garcia is a young man in his early 20's. He was dropped from the force due to his ruthless methods, although his unconventiallity is what gets the job done. The maze murderer is giving the police force a whole lot of trouble. His identity is unknown as he wears a white mask which he leaves at the scene of the crime. His signature is to leave the rope he strangles his victims with, next to the body.

Detective Garcia decidedes to take it upon himself to capture the killer. He brings in his trusty but dopey assistant Taylor James to help. Its a race to find the maze killer before he gets #Victim number 6. Will his assistants mishaps, his love for women or his turbulent personal life lead him to the trouble he trys to avoid .

Reflection on AS project

Last year's project was a bit of a struggle for me in reference to team work. I found myself having various problems within my group. We started off well, when it came to audience research and storyboards. As the project progressed, it became more strenuous. The other two members in my group were quite lazy and a bit too relaxed. This hindered the project when it came to editing and filming. It was also hard making a filming schedule that was suitable for all of us, as we all had different timetables.

From audience research I learnt that it is better to use closed questions when it comes to the questionnaire. Participants seem to prefer closed questions as it gets right to the point and they don't have to spend time giving answers in detail. Closed questions also make it easier to get the surveys back, as it is a quick process to answer.

After talking to one of my collegues in my group he also discussed problems with his group. He liked his group, however there was a lazy member in the group.

This year I am in a completely different group to what i was in last year. We  all have something different to bring as we were all in different groups last year and we all have had different experiences.

After reflecting on last year's project, there are definitely some changes that I would make. This year I would like to schedule the groups time properly, so everyone knows exactly what they are doing.

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon - Analysis

Transformers: Dark Of The Moon is aimed at teens. The film is a PG therefore there will be a wide audience. The trailer hardly gives anything away and it does not feature the main characters. This shows the reputation of the film as being a successful trilogy.  Two names are featured in the credits which are Michael Bay the director and Steven Speilburg the executive producer. This helps to bring in an older generation of people as Speilburg and Bay are very successful in the film industry.

The use of old actual NASA footage gives the film a sense of realism. The trailer suggests that the film is in the genre of Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi due to shots of space. The heavy amount of CGI and special effects used suggest that the film is a big budget movie. The trailer opens in silence, then the music kicks in. This creates a sense of mystery. When the transformers are in shot of the camera, they are at a low angle shot. This not only suggests their power, but also foreshadows a foregoing storyline.

Senna - Analysis

Senna is a biopic, based on the formula 1 driver. Due to it being a biopic, it will be aimed at a niche audience. Preferably people who are interested in the sport. The film is most probably directed at the older generation, dominantly male and 30+. Snippets of actual footage of Senna creates realism

Age Of Heroes - Analysis

The Age Of Heroes is an Action/War film, this is evident from the sartorial codes, mise en scene and various war/action sequences. The film appears to be aimed at men between the ages of 18 and 35. There is an abscence of females and due to the genre of the film this is clear. The two main characters in the film are Danny Dyer and Sean Bean. As they are the main characters it brings a certain age group to the film as the actors were very popular in the 70's. Throughout the teaser trailer, there is fast paced orchestral and atmospheric music which sets the pace and tone for the trailer. Diagetic sounds are used such as the sound or artillery and battle scenes. As well as diagetic sounds, non-diagetic sounds are used, such as the commentary. From the outset there is a picture of the Nazi flag which indicates that the film will be based around WWII. The editing is fast paced to emphasise the battle scenes. The camera uses wide shots and overhead shots for the scenery and battle scenes,  as well as close ups for possible main characters. The voiceover is very masculine and loud which suggests that he could be the General or someone the characters report to.

Introductary to A2 Media

Today we were introduced to what we will be doing in A2 Media. We discussed the overview of this years coursework and were put into our groups. After dicussing the A2 Production Project this year, we watched three recent teaser trailers for three different genres of film.
